HOSTPLUS CUP

Finals Week 4 (Grand Final): Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 22 def Burleigh Bears 18

Our Hostplus Cup Tigers were crowned the 2023 Premiers after a hard-fought grand final victory over the much-fancied Burleigh Bears.

The crowd was vocal, with plenty of support for both the Tigers and the Bears from the get-go.

Visibly emotional, Suzuki Brisbane Tigers coach Matt Church said the team had “created history” and it meant so much to him, to the team and to the club.

“Board members are crying… it is an emotional time… we found a way and we did it. We have broken a drought.

Our defence was just outstanding. We hunted them from the start and we just kept going.

It was an 80-minute performance… we found a way.

I thought our best footy could beat Burleigh’s best footy. Neither side was at our best today but you get that in these games with pressure moments. We owned a few moments a bit better than them.

I would have preferred it not to be that close but we have done that all year so why make the grand final any different.”

I am just so proud of the group. If someone told me 12 months ago this could have been a possibility, I would not have believed them.

I am choking back tears now.

It means so much… our long-suffering fans, it has been 32 years.”

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS

Finals Week 4 (Grand Final): Townsville Blackhawks 40 def Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 0

Our Tigers played hard for the full 80 minutes but were overpowered by a dominate Townsville Blackhawks in the 2023 Hastings Deering Colts grand final at Kayo Stadium.

2022 premiers, the Blackhawks dominated from start to finish to post an upset victory and become the first back-to-back premiers in the competition’s history.

With it also being the last year of the Hastings Deering Colts competition, the Blackhawks will proudly go down in history as the final champions.

Suzuki Brisbane Tigers coach Mark Gliddon said his team were simply outplayed but he was still proud of their efforts throughout 2023.

“The Blackhawks showed up in a big way. They were really good.

I cannot take any credit away from them. We did not have our best game.

They ran hard, they tackled hard. They were just too good.

They ended up with 60 per cent of the footy with a completion rate of around 90 per cent, which is bloody hard to defend against.

I will give my boys a wrap. They got here – it is not an easy thing to get to. I am proud and pleased for them.

Not everyone gets to go to the big dance and we did.”
