May is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month.
On 3 May, we honoured the lives of those lost to domestic and family violence by lighting a candle, in support of the incredible ongoing advocacy efforts of Small Steps 4 Hannah.
Remember, domestic violence does not discriminate.
It is a social issue, it affects so many lives and the impacts can be far reaching.
BMD Premiership player Portia Bourke had a personal connection with Hannah Clarke.
“Hannah and I used to train at one of the crossfit gyms she owned. She was such a great person and had a personality where you just wanted to be around her all the time.
She was the main reason I wanted to go train, and she pretty much made me the person I am today.
Hannah was the type of person that no one could say a bad thing about.
So it was really eye-opening to find out about what was happening behind closed doors.
I know it is hard to speak up, it is easier said than done. But if you are feeling alone, you are not actually alone.
You always have people and your loved ones around you to listen. I know it is hard to take that first step, but the first step is always the hardest to take.
Talk to the ones you love, seek advice through them and do not be afraid to talk about it.”
