Suzuki Brisbane Tigers speedster Glen Fisher hails from Cherbourg, has X factor and is looking to play his way to the NRL during the next few years.
Suzuki Brisbane Tigers Hastings Deering Colts coach Mark Gliddon said the promising winger, who was quiet with a cheeky sense of humour, could “go anywhere he wants, to be honest”.
“He is not overly big… but he is certainly brave and he is fast. He has got some really good attributes, especially that X factor.
“Glen’s a Cherbourg product, Murgon product. I think it is terrific he has made his way to the big city. He is a really good kid.”
His accolades over the years have included South Burnett Junior Eagle of the Year, South Burnett A-Grade player of the year, most tries for the year, best attacking player and the Gavin Cooper Trophy for the most influential player at Murgon Mustangs.
Fisher first got involved in rugby league at Cherbourg Hornets after watching his older brother, sisters and cousins play; he said his parents had always been his biggest supporters.
“I started in Cherbourg… played two years there, then in Murgon until under 16s, then came down here for school and played 18s at Wynnum,” Fisher said, adding his Wynnum side won the premiership in 2021 before he won an A Grade premiership with Murgon Mustangs in 2022.
“My parents… they have done everything for me since little. They used to come down from Cherbourg to watch me on the weekend and go home… they would do that every week.
“It means a lot. Without them, I do not think I would be able to be here to stay.”
The 20-year-old is determined to excel in the game, moving to Brisbane for more opportunity.
Fisher lived with Adam and Kylie Lipke when he first moved and attended Alexandra Hills State High School, then Mabel Park State High on a scholarship for Year 12.
“I was just looking for a better opportunity… there’s not much back home.”
That opportunity includes representing the Tigers in the Colts competition this year.
Fisher scored a try in his side’s Round 1 game against Western Clydesdales, adding the game was “more physical, faster” than games he had played previously.
“I love everything about the game. I would love to play in the NRL.”
Gliddon said he loved the dedication of the Colts players and it was a joy to watch them progress to Hostplus Cup.
“It is fantastic… these guys do not get paid but they cop a few hits here, there and everywhere.
“They are a good group, the Colts football players. What is pleasing is once these guys get the opportunity to go to the next level, in particular Cup… it is really pleasing from my perspective.
“I just want Glen to stay consistent. Make sure he’s at training and communicating with me. Would love to see him hold his spot in this side.
“I know he has trained with Cup side on a couple of occasions. You never know, he may get an opportunity throughout the year.”
