The Brisbane Tigers have added prop forward Sylvester Namo to their Hostplus Cup squad for the rest of 2025.

The 24-year-old has returned to Australia after being released from Castleford in April this year. Namo has spent the past 18 months with the Castleford Tigers making 24 appearances in the Betfred Super League.

Outside of Super League, Namo has represented Papua New Guinea on the world stage multiple times making his first appearance in the 2022 Pacific Nations Cup against Fiji. He also played in the 2022 & 2024 World Cup making appearances against Tonga, the Cook Islands and England. In total Sylvester has played 8 international matches since his first professional match at the age of 18 & making his Hostplus Cup debut at the age of 21.

Head Coach Matt Church, who has previously worked with the young prop when he was coaching at the PNG Hunters, said: “…he was one of five Hunters players to debut under me to go on to play Super League. Prior to his stint with Castleford Tigers he was contracted to the North Queensland Cowboys and was tracking towards an NRL debut before a season ending ACL injury. We have remained in close contact on his journey and knowing his ability and personality, once he became available it was a no-brainer for me to want to bring him to the Tigers.”

When asked what Sylvester will bring to the squad, Matt Church said:

“I think he will bring a load of intent to our team, due to his low centre of gravity and powerful physique he can be very hard to handle in attack and very impactful in defence.”

“Syl is aspirational, he has things he wants to achieve. Outside of trying to bring success to the Tigers he will have an eye on taking the next step in his career. I believe at the Tigers, we can help him take that step, doing so means that he will be playing well for us and raising the level of our performance.”

The Brisbane Tigers head to Cairns next weekend for their round 1 catch up match against the Northern Pride. The match will be streamed live via Qplus.tv at 6:00pm AEST.
