The 2023 Indigenous Round is here, with celebrations taking place right across Queensland.
Round 16 of the Hostplus Cup marks this significant occasion ahead of NAIDOC Week, with clubs encouraged to connect with Indigenous communities and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
Clubs throughout the Hostplus Cup competition will honour Indigenous Round in various ways, including community visits, special jerseys, ceremonies and activities, with BMD also hosting craft stations for Northern Pride, Redcliffe, Norths, Souths Logan and Ipswich.
The design of this year’s Suzuki Brisbane Tigers jersey was inspired in part by the children of Easts Juniors‘ Secretary Angela Young.

Hastings Deering Colts
Round 11: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Northern Pride
Match Kick off: 3.00pm
Date: Saturday, 1st July 2023
Location: Barlow Park, Cairns
Our first-placed Colts take on the so far winless Northern Pride Jets away at Barlow Park, Cairns, looking to improve their consistency after a come-from-behind win against the Jets last weekend in Ipswich.
A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:
“We played the Ipswich Jets last Saturday. It was a tough physical game of footy, we were probably a little complacent, and the Jets played really well to be ahead 16 to 14 at half time
A few choice words were said at half time at the boys, and they picked their game up in the second half and we ended up getting a nice result.
We have got Cairns this weekend up at Barlow Park. It will be a tough trip up there as we have got to jump on a plane early in the morning and play that afternoon, so we could possibly be a little bit rushed.
The Pride have struggled in recent weeks. So we concentrate on our own backyard and focus on ourselves, and if we get that right I am quietly confident we can come away with the win.
Glen Fisher is from Cherbourg, and I have not really spoken to him too much about Indigenous round this weekend. But I know that he is a very proud indigenous person and I am sure the boys will celebrate it with him.
At the end of the day, our main focus is to get up there and to get the two points. That is what is really important to us.
It is great to celebrate Indigenous round, in particular for Glen, but our job is to worry about bringing home the two points.”

Hostplus Cup
Round 16: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Northern Pride

Location: Barlow Park, Cairns
Donning our 2023 Indigenous Round jersey, the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers will run out against the Pride in Cairns hoping for a positive result as they push to cement their position at the top end of the Hostplus Cup ladder.
Our Tigers have won their last three – and four of their last five – away games, but come up against a Northern Pride outfit that have won two of the last three matches between these two sides.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:
“The Jets always play an attacking brand of football, and they can get on a roll and the bounce of the ball sort of favoured them a bit.
That momentum, when it swings against you, it is hard to get back at times. We just had to refocus and get on the same page.
It felt like we were a little bit frustrated as a team. Once we got on the same page in the second half, we ran away with a result.
It is always a challenging trip when you head up to Northern Pride. They have a really good footy side.
They are big through the middle of the field, and they are hard to handle at times. So we certainly have our work cut out for us going up there, but it is a good challenge.
They sit level with us on points, we are just ahead of them on for-and-against. So it is a really good challenge for us this weekend to go up there and get the job done, and hopefully we can put some distance between them and us.
Celebrating your culture is always a wonderful thing. So with Indigenous Round we will draw on the knowledge of those players and get an understanding of what that means to them.
I think it is really important, regardless of what culture you are from, to understand the cultures and where people come from, especially in a team environment because it helps you understand the individual.
We have got a number of guys with Indigenous heritage, and they are all looking forward to it but we will get them to speak before our team meeting and our Captain’s Run.
There will be a Welcome to Country before the match. Rugby league does that well, and we celebrate the Indigenous round really well. I am really looking forward to it.”

Tickets at the gate: Adults $10 | Concession $5 | Children under 15-years-old are free.
