In Finals Week 1, our Hostplus Cup Tigers take on Souths Logan Magpies away at Logan Metro Sports Complex.
The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers recently held off the Magpies in a thrilling two-point victory at Totally Workwear Stadium, and finished the regular season strongly with a 21-point win against Wynnum Manly Seagulls to finish third on the ladder.
After the former Hostplus Cup ladder leaders lost their grip on the Hostplus Cup minor premiership in the last round of the regular season after an upset defeat at the hands of the CQ Capras, Tigers coach Matt Church is expecting a fierce competitor in Souths Logan.
A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:
“It is always tough to go down to Wynnum and get the win. We were a little rusty coming off the bye round. But I thought we really stuck to our game plan and pulled away from the Seagulls.
So it was really pleasing to win, and also the strength of our second-half performance.
It is fair to say Souths Logan have been the best team all year, but they have been a little inconsistent over the last month. So they will be looking to put in a good performance.
We have never played at Logan Metro Sports Complex. The Magpies will be up for the contest, so we need to be as well.
If you look at the first half the last time the two teams played each other, we probably would have taken the mental edge and advantage away from the contest. But as the end result was a two-point win, the Magpies probably feel they had opportunities to win the game.
I think both teams will be fairly confident leading into this match. We have only lost one game on the road this year, and we are hoping to maintain that this weekend.”

In Finals Week 1, our Colts will take on the Townsville Blackhawks in a tough Saturday morning clash at Logan Metro Sports Complex.
The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers defeated the Blackhawks by four points earlier in the year. However, the Blackhawks had the best for-and-against of any team during the regular season.
A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:
“Wynnum Manly’s Kougari Oval is a really difficult place to win at. What was most pleasing was that we kept them to 16 points.
Our goal for defence is to usually keep the opposition to 18 points. But we changed it to 16 points against the Seagulls for a bit of a challenge, and I thought the boys responded and defended really well.
The Blackhawks have plenty of points in them and they are really well coached. They throw a lot of shapes at you.
But we know what we are up against and we have purposely done a few things differently this week to best prepare, such as reviewing their strong points and weaknesses earlier in the week than usual.
Brock Ashton and Casey Morgan were really good for us against the Seagulls. Casey ran over 200 metres, and for a bloke that weighs over 107 kilos he is playing big minutes.
If Casey and Brock get us going forward I think they will put us in a strong position to win.”
