The crowd was on the edge of their seats at Totally Workwear Stadium last Saturday. It was a thrilling back and forth match between the Tigers and the Dolphins, ending with defeat for the Tigers in the last 3 minutes of the game.
The Tigers took control of the first half, after a bright start for the Dolphins with the first try scored by Junior Tupou in the 2nd minute. The Tigers fought back quickly with Asher O’Donnell scoring in the 9th minute. At the end of the first half the Tigers had taken the lead 20 points to 12, scoring a further 3 tries from Josh Smith, Tahj Wood and a second try from Asher O’Donnell.
During the second half the Dolphins fought back quickly, scoring two tries in the 57th & 62nd minute, which allowed them to catch up to the Tigers. The Dolphins now had a 2 point lead.
With both teams desperate to take the win, the last 15 minutes of the game left everyone hanging off their seats. Mitchell Spencer stole the show scoring with 6 minutes left on the clock setting the Tigers up to win the match with a 2 point lead.
At 3 minutes to the buzzer, the Dolphins winger Ethan Quai-Ward scored in the corner after a kick bomb from Joshua James, sealing the match for the Dolphins with the final score sitting at 24-28.
Despite the loss, the Tigers showed immense grit and determination, and will be looking to bounce back when they face the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Piggabeen Stadium this Saturday, May 24.
