This week, Head Coach Jon Buchanan named Darren Nicholls as the Captain of the club’s Intrust Super Cup team for 2021.
While this is his first year with the Tigers, the halfback is extremely excited to lead the team on and off the field:
“I am very honored and privileged to be named captain of this club and I love the responsibility that comes with it”.
Having tasted success with the Penrith Panthers in the New South Wales Cup and State Championship during his career, Nicholls is hungry to add an Intrust Super Cup premiership to his list of achievements.
Nicholls will play an essential role of the club’s 2021 Leadership group which include players; Brett Greinke, Bennett Leslie, Gerard Beale, and Hugh Pratt.
Head Coach Buchanan in his first year with the Tigers, put the decision of the club Captain and Leadership group through the capable hands of the playing group while away at preseason camp. Players were given three days in identifying three peers on a 3-2-1 basis and strict criteria of whom display the club leadership values. The stringent process didn’t however end there, with every player required to present back to the playing group on why they voted for their chosen peers. This resulted with Nicholls unanimously voted by the playing group as the main leader.
Head Coach Buchanan spoke of the 2021 Leadership group:
“All five players selected represent the values we want to represent as a playing group and as a club. I am extremely happy with the players chosen, they are all good footballers but more importantly they are all terrific young men, who are so well respected around the club. I look forward to watching them all grow and drive the standards that have been put in place”.
Tigers CEO Brian said the Club was very pleased to announce Darren as the Intrust Super Cup team’s captain for the 2021 season.
“Darren is a talented footballer and an experienced leader. I have no doubt he will do a fabulous job in leading the side from the front, both on and off the field”, Torpy added.
