National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering.
The week-long event recognises the vital support that the millions of volunteers in our country provide to their communities and encourages people to consider volunteering.
In support of National Volunteer Week, the Brisbane Tigers are highlighting three incredible volunteers who help keep our club running – from Easts Juniors all the way to our Hostplus Cup Tigers.
Greg Hines – Manager of Hastings Deering Colts
Greg is an important part of the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers team that ensures our mighty Hastings Deering Colts are primed for game-day.
“I am one of the managers for the Hastings Deering Colts side. I originally came on board back in 2014 as a first aid assistant – a ‘Strapper’ – but as there were quite a few strappers here at the time I was offered the manager’s role for the Brisbane rugby league side.
This is my ninth year volunteering with the Brisbane Tigers.
I am a newbie when you look at some of the other managers such Andrew Ross and Kev Ryan, who have been here since before some of our current squad members were even born.
There have been quite a few memorable moments volunteering for the Brisbane Tigers.
Each year brings on different highlights, and I have been lucky enough to be involved with some very talented coaches that have been able to progress our teams through to the finals every season that I have been involved at the club.
My favourite aspect of volunteering as a squad manager is seeing the players develop.
At the Brisbane Tigers we have developed quite a few players into NRL stars, and even more that are on the brink of breaking through to the national competition.
If you like watching football, you may be surprised to know it does not just happen. There are a lot of people in the background working to get this great game organised for you to enjoy.
Fans of the game should consider volunteering as every little bit helps, from assisting the coaches with drills or just putting your name down to assist as a duty official or in the canteen.
You never know, you might just be assisting future Queensland Maroons and Australian players develop their skills.”
