Match Preview: August 20 (Turn to Me Round)

The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers will take on Wynnum Manly Seagulls away for their Hostplus Cup and Hastings Deering Colts matches this Sunday at Kougari Oval in Manly West.

Roughly one year after his passing, two of Paul Green’s former clubs in Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Brisbane Tigers will honour the former player and coach with the Paul Green Medal Memorial Day at Kougari Oval.

It is a day that will honour the former Queensland Maroons and North Queensland Cowboys mentor with footy, fun and reflection, as people remember the beloved Green while also raising awareness and money for CTE research, which is the brain disorder the 49-year-old tragically suffered from.

At 1pm a Legends match featuring former players from each Club will kick off, followed by the Round 22 Hostplus Cup showdown – the Charity Cup – between Wynnum Manly and the Tigers.

The two Cup sides will be led out by Paul Green’s children, Emmerson and Jed, and there will also be one minute’s silence for Shane McNally, who passed away recently.

The player of the Hostplus Cup match will then be awarded the inaugural Paul Green Medal.

Paul Green played for both the Seagulls and Tigers across his lifetime and then coached Wynnum Manly to back-to-back Cup premierships in 2011 and 2012.

Round 22 (Turn to Me Round): Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Wynnum Manly Seagulls
Match Kick off:
2.15pm
Date:
Sunday, 20th August 2023
Location:
BMD Kougari Oval, Brisbane

The final round of the 2023 Hostplus Cup season sees our Tigers take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in the final match for Paul Green Medal Memorial Day at Kougari Oval.

Sitting in third-place, our Tigers could climb to second on the Hostplus Cup ladder heading into the first week of the finals if they beat the Seagulls and other results fall in their favour.

It will also be a special weekend as the competition acknowledges Turn to Me Round, an initiative that encourages those within the game to share their burdens and speak to each other, to make sure people know they were not alone.

The awareness campaign was started in 2013 by Ipswich Jets chair Steven Johnson and former Redcliffe Dolphins players Petero Civoniceva and Isaak Ah Mau, in response to a number of tragic deaths of young players across rugby league.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

“It is always good to get a bye at this stage of the year.

We are refreshed from last week and now it is about building on our performance against Souths Logan from the week before and leveraging that in the Wynnum Manly game.

I thought we were outstanding in the first half against Souths so we want to maintain that.

We had to show a fair bit of resilience in the second half so hopefully we can limit the ability for Wynnum Manly to have the ball for long periods like Souths did.

I am expecting it to be an all out game. They are playing for a home final position and still have a chance to make it in the top four, so they will be all guns blazing and will not be happy with their last couple of weeks.”

Hastings Deering Colts

Round 16: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Wynnum Manly Seagulls
Match Kick off:
11.00am
Date:
Sunday, 20th August 2023
Location:
BMD Kougari Oval, Brisbane

The final round of the 2023 Hastings Deering Colts season sees our Tigers take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls that will kick off proceedings for Paul Green Medal Memorial Day at Kougari Oval.

Our Tigers sit level on points with ladder-leaders Tweed Seagulls and could potentially clinch the minor premiership if they beat the Seagulls and other results fall in their favour.

Jackson Chang was a massive part of a solid defensive display against the Jets with 33 tackles and Casey Morgan made 190 run metres, but it will be the Tigers fullback Lachlan West that will feature in the Seagulls plans this week.

West started the attacking mayhem for the Tigers with a try in the second minute and then just before half-time, when the Jets were getting some momentum, rounded off his three tries in the 60th minute.

West has the third most tries in the Colts and is having an impact every week. He finished against the Jets with a huge 176 run metres and two line breaks.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:

“I was pretty pleased with the result against the Ipswich Jets. They turned up ready to play, and the score did not indicate the effort they showed.

Apart from a couple of one-on-one defensive lapses, I was pretty happy with the result.

We worked really hard on squaring up our halves, Jake House and Bailey Black, during the week.

I thought they played nice and direct, and gave our outside backs plenty of room on the edge.

They are both really good footballers, they both compete really hard and their game management was much better than previous weeks.

We are really pleased that we finished Top 4 as it was a goal for our season.

People might say that it is a nothing game against Wynnum. But at the end of the day we want to compete in every game we play, and I am sure the Seagulls are the same.

There is nothing better than playing the Seagulls at Kourgari Oval. It is always going to be tough, and I am certainly looking forward to the chookpen chanting.”
