Hastings Deering Colts Round 15 preview: ‘We have got ourselves back some momentum’

By Michael Nunn (QRL correspondent)

It may not be finals time in the Hasting Deering Colts but this week may be the finals of August when the Brisbane Tigers take on the Sunshine Coast Falcons in a fifth versus sixth battle.

Tigers have had the weekend off after a big win over the Ipswich Jets two weeks ago. The Tigers were an immoveable force with a 72-10 win.

The Tigers scored 13 tries but most pleasing was the fact the Jets didn’t score until the 58th minute, as the Tigers looked like keeping a clean sheet. Jonah Glover is accumulating points like they’re footy cards and now has 130 points.

Brisbane Tigers coach Mark Gliddon is happy with the progress of the Tigers.

“Jonah hasn’t played a lot of rugby league and is still eligible for Colts next season so he’s young but progressing nicely,” Gliddon said.

“It wasn’t that long ago we lost three games in a row. We have got ourselves back some momentum with four wins in a row now.

“This will be a good game, Falcons are very similar to us and they have a lot of the same structures.”

As for who has impressed Gliddon, it’s his wingers.

“You don’t normally get to say that about wingers but both Sione Finau and Ariki Wallace have been great,” Gliddon said.

The Falcons were no slouches either against the Western Mustangs on Sunday. It took five minutes for Kaleb Sutton to enter the match and score a try, and from there he was never out of the game.

Sutton scored two tries and made 247 run metres for the Falcons.

Falcons coach Jamie Vogler knows where the Falcons’ strength lies.

“Kaleb Sutton has been great all year, he trains with Cup and plays Colts but he’s been great,” Vogler said.

“We have a smaller pack so we can’t play that power game but Sutton takes it up every week.

“This week is going to be a great game, Easts are close to the form team and will be a great test for us. We are underdogs for sure.”

The Falcons took more than their share of the ball with 59 per cent and turned it into 13 line breaks and 57 tackle breaks.

If these two teams bring this defence and attack this game will be a cracking pre-finals encounter.
