Round 8: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 36 def Townsville Blackhawks 18

Our Tigers took on the Blackhawks and proved why they are not to be underestimated this season, following a narrow loss to Burleigh Bears in Round 7.

The Tigers raced out to a half-time lead of 20 to 6 but struggled in the opening stages of the second half as the Blackhawks scored back-to-back tries through Wil Sullivan and Robert Derby.

However, Suzuki Brisbane Tigers Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church praised the team’s ability to get back in the game and strengthen the lead, with the Tigers holding out the Blackhawks for the remainder of the match as they ran in another three tries to secure the win.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

We had to be really resilient today. The Blackhawks came out after half-time and put it to us, but we found a way to get back on top and drove it home.

We have a mentality of finding a way to win, so it was pleasing that we can grind out a result like that.

I thought Saimone Ahomana on his debut was outstanding. Not only was he good in attack he was really good in defence.

‘Mone worked really well on his edge and he shut down a couple of tries, which was vital by the end of the game.

Round 3: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 28 def Townsville Blackhawks 24

The undefeated Suzuki Brisbane Tigers made quite the statement on Sunday, claiming their third win from the opening three rounds with a victory over the reigning premiers, Townsville.

It was a tit-for-tat showdown with the Tigers posting the first points on the board through fullback Lachlan West before Townsville scored a triple within the space of eight minutes midway through the opening half.

Five-eighth Bailey Black then gave the Tigers a late try before half-time. West was in again after the break, equalling the game at 16-all.

Quick hands then put Townsville winger Declan Dowson over in the corner, handing the Blackhawks back the lead, with an added penalty goal three minutes later extending that lead to 24 to 16.

Brisbane were not ready to throw in the towel however and mounted a comeback in the final six minutes, first crossing through a barnstorming Madison Beckett who scored next to the post to set up Black for an easy conversion.

With the game at 24 to 22, it was three-try hero West – running off a beautiful pass from Joe Nadenic – who sliced through to score under the posts in the 76th minute to seal victory for the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers.

Our Tigers will look to extend their unbeaten streak into Round 4 when they take on Norths Devils this coming Sunday at Bishop Park.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Cup coach Mark Gliddon:

It was an emotional rollercoaster, we were ahead and then we were behind, but we found a way to win and that was most pleasing.

We had a player in the sin bin for 10 minutes and we defended well and they did not score, so I think that was a huge turning point in the game.

It was two good footy teams, and we have had some really good battles over the years that I have been involved in.

There is not a great deal between the two teams, and it was a real tough and quality game of footy, and if I was not coaching I would have been very happy watching it.”

– Mark Gliddon
