HOSTPLUS CUP

Finals Week 1 (Qualifying Final): Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 34 def Souths Logan Magpies 26

Our Hostplus Cup Tigers are now one game away from the 2023 grand final after an upset victory against Souths Logan Magpies in qualifying final two at Logan Metro Sports Complex.

The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers fought back from a slim deficit at halftime, steamrolled their way to a 20-point lead and then nearly got run down against the Magpies in front of an enthralled crowd, winning 34 to 26.

The resilient efforts from our Tigers instilled confidence that they could strike if they could even up possession – even without Jonah Pezet, who left the game in the eleventh minute and forced Tristan Hope into halfback – and eventually took the lead two minutes after halftime through Leivaha Pulu.

From there the Tigers began to assert their dominance, adding three more tries in the next thirteen minutes for a 30 to 10 lead.

On the last play of the game, Max Lehmann was the hero for our Tigers, taking an intercept and racing away in the corner after the final siren.

Suzuki Brisbane Tigers coach Matt Church said their mountain of defensive work in the first half ultimately set up the win and affirmed his belief the Tigers had greatly improved their resilience.

“We gave away a mountain of penalties and a mountain of possession. I do not have the stats on me now, but it felt like we only had about 20 per cent of the ball and I knew that if we could get even share of the footy then we could score points.

“We showed that in that first half, but that first half set us up to win that game in the end.”

Church said the week off was a godsend to some of their senior players, and could allow for Tom Rafter to push for inclusion in the preliminary final.

HASTINGS DEERING COLTS

Finals Week 1 (Qualifying Final): Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 36 def Townsville Blackhawks 12

Our Colts continued to shape as genuine premiership contenders with a strong win over the Townsville Blackhawks at Logan Metro Sports Complex.

The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers on Saturday led 18 to 6 at the break, but fresh from hearing the halftime message from coach Mark Gliddon, Tigers’ hooker Jackson Chang went to dummy-half and split the Blackhawks up the middle to send lock Brock Ashton straight under the posts.

Just 44 seconds into the second half, the Blackhawks were now looking at a 24 to 6 scoreline and were unable to claw back the win.

Front rower Casey Morgan led the way for the Tigers, barging his way through 188 run metres, while Jackson Chang came off the bench and had a great impact with two tries.

The six-tries-to-two victory means our Colts will enjoy a week off before taking on a tough competitor to earn the right to progress to the 2023 Hastings Deering Colts grand final.

Their Preliminary Final is scheduled for second weekend of September at our home ground, Totally Workwear Stadium.
