HOSTPLUS CUP

Round 7: Burleigh Bears 20 def Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 16

The Bears edged out our Tigers 20 to 16 in a gritty showdown at UAA Park on the Gold Coast.

In a seesawing affair, one try made all the difference for the Bears. Our Tigers have plenty to be proud of, pushing the Bears to the final hooter.

It was our Hostplus Cup Tigers’ first loss since Round 2 and the team will look to bounce back this week when we host the Townsville Blackhawks at Totally Workwear Stadium on Sunday 7 May.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

It is always hard to go to Burleigh and come away with the two points. I thought we hung in the battle and tried to win the game in the final few minutes.

However, what we did with the footy and our completion rate in the second half did not help us get the win.

Not only did we lose both wingers but our centre got put on report twice, so we are waiting to see the outcome of those charges and extent of injuries before we start putting the pieces of the puzzle together.

But we have that ‘next-man-up’ mentality, and I am sure whoever steps up will do a good job.

We are looking forward to the challenge playing against the Blackhawks and building on some combinations. It is certainly a game we will not take lightly.

They are a young team and if you give them a sniff they will get on top of you early, so we need to make sure we are on our game this weekend.”

BMD PREMIERSHIP

Round 7: Burleigh Bears 42 def Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 8

The 2023 BMD Premiership semi-finals have been locked in, as Burleigh wrapped up the regular season with a victory over our Tigers on Sunday.

A brave Tigers outfit made the home team work for it in the first half, with the sides going into the break with Burleigh holding a narrow 10 to 4 lead.

But, led strongly by their forward pack and finding plenty of success down the left edge, the Bears flexed their muscle in the final half of the regular season.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ BMD Premiership coach Adrian Vowles:

“I was disappointed with the result against Burleigh but I was not disappointed with the effort from the girls.

We were well in it at half time but unfortunately could not continue that in the second half.

Tara Reinke had another big game and took her running metres to over 1,100 metres for the season, which is an awesome achievement.

Keisha -Leigh Coolwell backed her three tries last week with another double against the Bears, and Estanoa Faitala and Portia Bourke also had strong games.

It was an improvement on last year’s results, which is a result of all the hard work the girls have put in during the season. And to have five Under 19’s girls in the team bodes well for the future.”

– Adrian Vowles

Tigers’ Woman of the Match: Estanoa Faitala

HASTINGS DEERING CUP

Round 2: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 40 def Burleigh Bears 26

Our Suzuki Brisbane Tigers notched up back-to-back wins to start their season with an away win against a Burleigh Bears team who fought until the full time whistle.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Cup coach Mark Gliddon:

I was quite pleased to get the two points as it is not easy taking on Burleigh at Burliegh.

We have a couple injury concerns from the game, and we need to pick our defence up a little. Our one-on-ones were a little disappointing on the weekend and we leaked 26 points.

We also need to look at our discipline, in particular when the opposition is coming out of their own end and making sure we do not give them easy outs.

We are looking forward to the Blackhawks this weekend, as they are the premiers from last year and have some wonderful players. It should be a cracking game of footy.

– Mark Gliddon
