HOSTPLUS CUP

Round 5: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers 24 def Mackay Cutters 16

Our Hostplus Cup Tigers were made to fight at our home den at Totally Workwear Stadium to get the two points against a spirited Mackay Cutters outfit. Solomona Faataape (Centre) was the star of the show for the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers, scoring a brilliant hat-trick.

Marion Seve (Centre) scored the Tigers’ second try and put us into the lead for the first time in the game in the 33rd minute.

Jordan Grant topped the Tigers’ tackle count with 34, while Joe Chan played 80 minutes in the back-row and gained 103 metres (47 post-contact metres) in his first match back after three weeks.

A review from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

We were reduced to 14 players for most of the second half after we lost both wingers, halfback and we had our fullback sin-binned. All the key positions you do not generally have cover for on your bench.

The players playing out of position did a fine job, especially defensively, and I thought we were brave to tough out the win under the circumstances.

To the Cutters’ credit, they hung in there and made us work for the result. We let them off the hook with our discipline and our effectiveness to build pressure when we had a lot of territory and possession.

It was far from our best performance with the ball, but I thought it was our best defensive effort this season. The important part is that we managed to win when we were not at our best.”
– Matt Church
