Hastings Deering Colts

Round 14: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Souths Logan Magpies
Match Kick off:
3.30pm
Date:
Saturday, 5th August 2023
Location:
Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park

After several weeks without playing a fixture, our Colts will be raring to go when they tackle the Souths Logan Magpies in a top-eight battle at Totally Workwear Stadium.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:

The tough loss against Tweed came down to probably the last 15 minutes of the game.

We led by eight points with probably 12 minutes to go and our game managers, no. 6, our no. 7 and our no.9 probably did not manage the game as well as what we should have.

We kicked dead a couple of times and gave them seven tackles with 20 metres, and we just could not defend the win.

Tweed are a real good side and they are hard to beat at Piggabeen, and they are sitting on top of the table.

Our effort areas were really good, we just did not manage the game well at the back end of it.

Souths Logan are a pretty good side, they are in the top eight on the ladder, they are well coached by Lincoln McLeod who has been around a while.

They hang in there, they do not go away, so for us to come away with a result we are looking for we probably need to play for the full 80 minutes.

Our crucial players are Jake House and Bailey Black, who are our halves. It is very important that they manage the game.

Jake said to me a couple of weeks ago, “You know, I manage your footy team, Gliddo”, so he needs to do that. That is his job. And Bailey’s is probably very similar.

We have got a little bit of a change this week in the no. 9 role. Brayden Seu-Easthope is out injured so Jackson Chang will come in.

He has come through the pathways system here from Mel Maninga into Hasting Deerings Colts. So I am quietly confident that Changy will do a good job for us.”

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

“It was a tough contest against PNG, they are always physical. I thought their first 35 minutes are outstanding and we did well to contain them to 12 points.

Having coached them before, I knew that they could not be that consistent for 80 minutes. We managed to get our game on, and I thought we did really well to run away with the contest.

In the first half we did not build enough pressure and I thought we did that well in our second half, through repeat sets and also scoring back-to-back tries.

We address after the loss against Tweed was that we sort of were not getting around each other enough.

The things that have been holding us back are not talent or skill, they have just been our application at times.

So we wanted to enjoy our footy on the weekend and enjoy each other’s company, and we saw that on the back of some of our tries and the boys really getting around each other.

Souths Logan have been the most consistent side all year, and their ladder position dictates that. They have only lost two games, so they are always going to be a challenge.

They have a high completion rate and let you make your mistakes and hope that you beat yourselves.

Corey Thompson probably played his best game for us of the year after switching back to full back against the Hunters. Our left edge has been really good, so we probably just need to see a few tweaks on our right edge outside Jonah.

I think if we can put in a full team performance, we should be right.”
