Match Previews: June 4

The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers will face the CQ Capras for Hostplus Cup and Hastings Deering Colts clashes this Sunday at our home den, Totally Workwork Stadium at Langlands Park.

Hastings Deering Colts

Round 7: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v CQ Capras
Match Kick off:
1.00pm
Date:
Sunday, 4th June 2023
Location:
Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park

Currently placed second on the ladder, our undefeated Colts take on the twelfth-placed CQ Capras at our home den, Totally Workwear Stadium.

Our Tigers have been in tremendous form and are currently undefeated with five wins from five games. They dealt with the Mackay Cutters last round winning 30 to 14 in a complete display, and their defence so far this season has been outstanding.

Against the Cutters, the Tigers led 16 to 10 at half time and then closed it out in the second half with three second half tries to the Cutters’ one.

The Suzuki Brisbane Tigers did this with less ball than the Cutters, which shows how resilient they are at the moment. Our Colts made better use of the ball when they had it and that resulted in eight-line breaks and six tries on the back of their ball usage.

At the heart of the Tigers’ attack was Lachlan West who scored a try right at the end of the game, racked up 253 run metres and three line breaks.

West now has five tries for the season, and teammate Bailey Black has 44 points – the third most points of all players in the season to date.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:

Last weekend we came up against a pretty spirited Cutters team. They were pretty tough and it is going to be no different this week when we play the Central Queensland Capras.

Going to Mackay on a plane is a tough road trip for us. Our completion rate was quite high, that was really pleasing, whereas in the previous weeks it has not been.

We are really looking forward to playing at home this week against the CQ Capras, the facilities here are fantastic. CQ have not been travelling as well as probably what they should have. They got a draw last weekend against Norths Devils.

Sooner or later they are going to get a win, we just have to make sure it is not against us.”

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

CQ Capras sit level with us on points, and we are just ahead on for and against, so it is a vital game for us.

The two teams above us also play each other, so it could be a really good weekend if we come away with the right result.

The Capras are a team that will not go away. They will play for 80 minutes, so we are going to have to stay in the fight for the whole game to get the win.

They have got a host of Papua New Guineans that come off the bench and they push off the back fence, so they will be hard to contain. We need to make sure we match up physically and win the collision.

It is going to be a great match. It is certainly one we are looking forward to as a group to see where we are at, and I feel like it is going to be a great contest that is going to go the full 80 minutes.”
