Round 9: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Sunshine Coast Falcons
Match Kick off:
1.00pm
Date:
Sunday, 18th June 2023
Location:
Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park

Our table-topping and undefeated Colts take on the seventh-placed Sunshine Coast Falcons at our home, Totally Workwear Stadium.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hastings Deering Premiership coach Mark Gliddon:

“Last week we came up against the Redcliffe Dolphins in a top-of-the-table clash. It was a really tough, physical game of footy and we went in at half time down 12 to 6.

Field position did not go in our favour in the first half, but we seemed to get a fair bit more footy in the second half. At the end of the day, we got away with a 22 to 16 win.

To do that we had to complete around 80 percent, which was very pleasing from a coaching perspective.

I am really, really pleased and proud of the boys in the way they have conducted themselves so far this season. They are a bit banged up at the moment, and there are a couple of suspension concerns, but we just keep finding a way to win.

I have got to give Jody Barlow, our defense coach, a big wrap. Defensively we were really good on the weekend.

This weekend, we come up against the Falcons. There are a couple of areas we need to improve, mainly our discipline when the opposition’s coming out of their own end. We have got a bad habit of giving penalties away and giving them an easy out.

We also need to pick up our one-on-one tackles, but all-in-all it was a really pleasing effort against the Dolphins.”

Hostplus Cup

Round 14: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Sunshine Coast Falcons
Match Kick off:
3.00pm
Date:
Sunday, 18th June 2023
Location:
Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park

Our Hostplus Cup Tigers are fourth on the ladder and go into Sunday’s clash with the ninth-placed Falcons looking to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat to Redcliffe, as a gallant second half effort saw our Tigers almost reel in the Dolphins.

This weekend’s match will bring up the 50th Queensland Cup game coached by our head coach Matt Church. He has reached this milestone across his time with PNG Hunters and the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers. He has 22 wins, two draws and 25 losses.

The match will also be the 50th Cup game for Tigers’ veteran Corey Thompson. He has played with Souths-Logan and the Suzuki Brisbane Tigers in Queensland Cup.

Coincidently, he made his debut for the Magpies against the Tigers and scored a try in his first appearance.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

We are never pleased to lose a game, especially to the Dolphins who are an arch-rival.

We were down 20 to nil at half time. But it was really encouraging the way the guys got back into the game, and with 10 minutes to go we were within 4 points and had a bit of momentum.

In rugby league you need everything to go your way and unfortunately things did not go our way, and the Dolphins managed to capitalise with a couple of late tries.

To get back into the game, I think the guys acknowledged at half time the aspects we were not good at. They rose to the challenge and got themselves back into the contest, so I am really happy about that.

Coming up against the Falcons, it is always an enjoyable one as the two clubs are affiliated with the Melbourne Storm.

We have players that come to us that train each week together down in Melbourne and they always look forward to the battle.

After last week’s defeat it is about just maintaining what we are good at and getting back to that, which has been really good and successful and won us a lot of games of footy this year.”
