Match Preview: Ryley Jacks’ 100th Queensland Cup game

Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup captain Ryley Jacks is gearing up to play his 100th Queensland Cup game this weekend, leading the team out in their Round 6 clash against the Western Clydesdales in our newly redeveloped Totally Workwear Stadium, Langlands Park.

Jacks, who made his Cup debut with the Brisbane Tigers back in 2014 and was a Tigers junior, has also played with the Sunshine Coast Falcons, Burleigh Bears and Tweed Seagulls during his Cup career and with Melbourne Storm and Gold Coast Titans in the NRL.

“The club means a lot to me and my family. I started down at Scott Park through Easts Juniors and then played all the way up to Colts”, Jacks said.

“I have been able to fulfil my NRL dreams, but I always wanted to come back to the Tigers. I have really enjoyed taking on the responsibility of captain and having more of a say around what we do off the field.

“I am grateful that it has aligned to be running out for my hundredth Queensland Cup game at Langlands Park, and being captain makes it even more special.”

Asked to cast his mind back almost a decade to his first Queensland Cup game, Jacks said it was difficult to not be taken aback by the occasion.

“If I could say one thing to my younger self in his debut game, I would tell him it is not as hard as you think,” Jacks said.

“Looking back now, I would tell my younger self ‘you’ll be right, stop stressing’ and back myself.

“It is what I tell anyone coming into the Queensland Cup. You have obviously been selected and are good enough to be here.

“Believe you are good enough to be here, and enjoy it.”

On the Tigers’ good run of form to kick off the year, Jacks said it has been a good start to the season.

“We have some tough games ahead of us, but I do have a very special feeling about this year,” Jacks said.

“As long as we keep winning we will be able to bring bigger crowds to Langlands Park.

“I remember when I was a little fella, the crowds would come when the team was winning.

“It would be nice later next year, if we are in a position like the 2004 Brisbane Tigers team, to sell out the stadium.

“I would love to see a fully packed Langlands Park again.”

Hostplus Cup

Round 6: Suzuki Brisbane Tigers v Western Clydesdales
Match Kick off: 3:00pm
Date: Sunday, 23rd April 2023
Location: Totally Workwear Stadium, Brisbane

Round 6 of the Hostplus Cup will be a significant weekend for teams across the competition, as we commemorate ANZAC Day.

Our Hostplus Tigers have won their last three games, including a 54-20 win over Ipswich Jets – the most points they have ever scored against Ipswich.

A preview from Suzuki Brisbane Tigers’ Hostplus Cup coach Matt Church:

First and foremost, it is our captain’s hundredth game in Queensland Cup.

100 games at this level is quite an achievement. We are strong in our mentality, ‘if it is important to one of us, it is important to all of us’, so it is certainly something we want to honour by putting in a good performance for Ryley.

The Clydesdales will be a challenge as they got their first win of the season last weekend, so they will be brimming with confidence. We cannot afford to take them lightly.

This is probably the first adversity the group has faced in terms of injuries this season picked up in the Cutters game, but like most teams we have a ‘next man up’ mentality.

We are very lucky we have a strong roster, and the guys coming in have all played competently at this level before.

I am sure they have been dying for their opportunity, and our playing group’s ‘’Be ready, stay ready’ mentality means they are ready to take it with two hands.”
