VALE – PROFESSOR JOE BAKER AO OBE

The Suzuki Easts Tigers are mourning the passing of club legend, Professor Joe Baker AO OBE

Joe was an outstanding Tiger’s Captain and represented Brisbane and the Queensland Maroons in the 1950’s.

Joe joined the Tigers from Warwick in 1950 playing in our U18 grade. Joe made his first grade debut in 1952, before going on to play 170 first grade games, becoming the Club’s second Centurion.

What made Joe’s outstanding career even more remarkable was that he achieved this whilst attaining academic honours in the field of science.

Joe was a world authority in natural resource management and was recognised as a pioneer of marine pharmacology. He made significant impacts in the development of sustainable resource management for waterways and land in Queensland and at an international level.

A founding Director of the Queensland Academy of Sport, Joe oversaw the development of sports science and sports medicine services.

In 2001 Joe was recognised as a Queensland Great for his lifetime of dedication and contribution to the development of Queensland.

A Life Member, Joe was named at lock-forward in the Tigers 75th Jubilee Celebration Team.

A service will be held for Joe at 1:30pm on Wednesday 24 January 2018 at Northwood Park, Mitchell ACT.

R.I.P Joe Baker.
