One of the most significant weeks of the Hostplus Cup season is here as teams prepare for the 2023 Indigenous Round.
The team will wear Indigenous jerseys in Round 16, with welcome to country ceremonies and other special celebrations planned for matches across the weekend.
The design of this year’s Suzuki Brisbane Tigers jersey was inspired in part by the children of Easts Juniors‘ Secretary Angela Young , as she explains.
“We at Easts Juniors discussed the concept of joining the Brisbane Tigers in celebrating Indigenous Round as we have an increasing number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children participating at our club.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community has always been an important part of Easts Juniors – as players, supporters, volunteers and amongst the coaching group.
We wanted to acknowledge their contribution and our club’s broader commitment to creating an inclusive environment that values sport’s role in closing the gap in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
When I first discussed the concept with my children, my son asked my uncle to paint his Tigers jersey for him as a way of showing his pride in his two favourite things: his culture and his footy.
We were so impressed with the result that we took it to our Committee to support the concept and then reached out to the Brisbane Tigers.
The kids are so excited to be wearing the same jersey as the big guys to celebrate Indigenous Round in July during our Easts Juniors home games at Langlands Park.”
The jersey artist is Arthur Conlon, of the Wakka Wakka/Kullalli people. He has five great nephews at our club and is very proud to see his design come to life.
“The art on this jersey is the story of how our rugby league club works together as a team and as one community.
The arcs and circles on the front tell a story of gathering and being together in our community at Easts.
The dot work and art on the jersey’s shoulders depicts people coming from many different areas but all have gathered, united at our club.
The boomerangs represent ‘coming and going’ and that as people come and go from our Easts community, they are always welcome to return.
The Aboriginal warrior at the bottom of the jersey reminds us to work hard, never give up and believe in ourselves.”
