The Sunshine Coast Falcons continued their stellar start to the season, defeating the Easts Tigers 23-16 last Saturday afternoon in the FOGS Colts Challenge.

The Falcons got an early lead with Jake Egan crossing the line within the first 10 minutes, before the Tigers hit back in the 18th minute through Aaron Pidcock.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Falcons, however, with the Tigers locking up the scores in the 58th minute.

Easts were led by their forward pack in the second half to bring them back into the match, with Josef Cash-Tobin and Bailey Court both scoring within 10 minutes of each other. Halfback Nathan Brown successfully converted both tries. which boosted the team’s performance.

LOST BALL

A field goal, however, from Jack White in the 66th minute all but sealed the match before Tom Rafter added to the victory scoring a four pointer to finalise the game.

We have been strong in the second half, so Jack taking the kick was something that I was happy with,” Falcons coach Mick Buckley said.

It was one of those games where both teams turned the ball over, and it was ultimately decided by who could capitalise on the possession.”

Despite some frustrations, Buckley was full of praise for his determined side. “We aren’t a big side, but defensively Stephen Buckley (prop) and Jacob Boyce (lock) have been really good for us, they work really hard up the middle.”

The Falcons face the Redcliffe Dolphins this weekend at Sunshine Coast Stadium, in an important game for both teams who sit second and third on the ladder, respectively.

A win by the Dolphins would push them into second position in the FOGS Colts Challenge ladder, putting them in good place coming into the second half of the season, with only six matches left in the competition.

CROWD-PLEASER

The previous time the two teams met, it was a fiery encounter, and this week’s match will not disappoint spectators of the two sides.

Over the years there have been a rivalry there, I’d love to meet them when both sides are at full strength; there has been a bit a banter between the two sides,” Buckley said.

I think it’ll be a fast game, a really quick game, it’ll be won by who scrambles for the footy the best and who can make the most of their time with the ball.”

The Falcons v Dolphins game will kick off at 1:15pm at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday, July 8.
